History of Goa 
During the later Vedic period, when the Hindu epic "Mahabharata" has been written, Goa was referred as "Gomantak", which means a fertile land. However, it is the Portuguese who gave Goa its name. Before they arrived Goa was known as Gove or Gowapura.
